
A temporary repair buys hours, not weeks, and only on the right pipe and the right failure. What actually holds, how to apply it, what must never be attempted, and the point at which stopping is the correct decision.
A temporary repair on a leaking pipe is a holding measure, and it is worth being honest about what it holds. Done properly on the right failure, it turns a running leak into a dry pipe for long enough to get through a night, a weekend or a bank holiday. Done on the wrong pipe, or relied on for a month, it fails without warning at the moment nobody is watching, and the second escape is usually worse than the first because everything around it is already weakened.
This sets out what actually works, matched to the pipe material and the kind of failure, in what order to do it, and where the line is between a sensible stopgap and something that should not be attempted at all. The first step is the one people skip.
Isolate First, Repair Second
Nothing sticks to a wet pipe under pressure. Every temporary method on the list below needs the water off, the pressure down and the surface dry, and the attempt to apply one to a live leak is the reason most of them are reported not to work.

If the stop tap will not turn, or turns and does not stop the flow, that is its own problem and it changes what you do next. Electrical safety comes before the pipe
Water and electricity share more of a building than people assume, and a ceiling holding water is a live hazard rather than a decorating problem. Switch off the circuits serving affected areas at the consumer unit before working under a wet ceiling, do not operate switches or sockets that have been wet, and do not place a bucket under a bulging ceiling and stand beneath it. What Kind of Pipe, and What Kind of Failure
The right method depends far more on what the pipe is made of than on how big the leak looks. Identify the material before opening a packet of anything.

The failure type changes the answer
A pinhole in the middle of a straight run is the ideal candidate for a temporary repair: the surrounding metal is sound, the surface is regular, and a clamp has something to grip. A split along the length of a pipe, which is what freezing produces, is the worst candidate, because the split is longer than it looks and continues under the clamp. A weeping compression joint is usually not a repair job at all, since a quarter turn on the nut with a spanner, applied gently, resolves a large proportion of them. A failure at a threaded steel joint in a corroded system is a warning about the whole run rather than a single defect.

Why a proper clamp outperforms everything else
A repair clamp works by compressing a rubber liner evenly around the full circumference, so the sealing force is distributed and does not depend on adhesion to a surface that has been wet. Tape and putty both depend on bond strength to a prepared surface, which is exactly what a corroded, scaled or damp pipe cannot provide. If there is one item worth having in a house with older pipework, it is a clamp in the diameter the property actually uses, which in most United Kingdom homes means fifteen millimetre and twenty two millimetre.
How to Apply a Temporary Repair Properly
Most temporary repairs fail on preparation rather than on the product. The sequence is the same regardless of which method you use:
- Isolate the section and open a low outlet so the pipe drains and the pressure drops to nothing.
- Dry the pipe thoroughly, well beyond the wet area. A cloth then a hairdryer on a cool setting is enough, provided the electrical situation is safe.
- Clean the surface back to sound material with wire wool or abrasive cloth, and remove the dust. Loose corrosion is what most patches actually stick to.
- Apply the method as the manufacturer states, including the stretch on self-amalgamating tape, which only fuses under tension, and the full cure time on epoxy, which is not a suggestion.
- Extend the repair well past the visible defect in both directions. Pinholes are rarely alone, and a split is longer than the part that is weeping.
- Restore pressure slowly, not by throwing the stop tap fully open, and stay and watch it for several minutes.
- Put a container and a towel under the repair anyway, and check it again within the hour and before going to bed.
- Photograph the pipe and the repair, and note the date and time. If a claim follows, that record is worth more than any description written later.
What Not to Attempt
- Anything on a gas pipe. Leave the building and call the national gas emergency service on 0800 111 999.
- Anything on lead pipework. It is soft, patches deform it further, and the drinking water implications are a separate matter.
- Any hot work, meaning a blowtorch, near joists, insulation, flooring or a ceiling void. This is a common cause of fire following a well-intentioned repair.
- Sealant, mastic or duct tape on a pressurised pipe. None of them are rated for internal pressure and all of them create the illusion of a repair.
- Introducing a leak sealant additive into a heating system as a substitute for finding the leak. It can block heat exchangers and narrow circuits, and it makes the actual defect harder to locate afterwards.
- Anything that would put a non-approved material in contact with the wholesome water supply. The Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 prohibit materials likely to cause contamination, and that applies to a temporary fitting as much as a permanent one.
- Working under a bulging, water-filled ceiling. It is a structural and electrical hazard, not a plumbing one.
What a Temporary Repair Cannot Do
The honest limits matter more than the technique, because a stopgap that is trusted too far causes the damage the original leak did not.
It does not survive pressure and temperature cycling
Mains pressure in a property is not constant. It varies through the day, and every time a tap closes quickly the system takes a pressure surge. Hot pipes expand and contract with every heating cycle. A patch that sits perfectly still at the moment of application is worked loose by that movement over days, which is why temporary repairs so often fail at three in the morning rather than in the afternoon.
It does not tell you why the pipe failed
This is the part that costs people money. A pinhole in copper is frequently a symptom of a condition affecting a whole run rather than a one-off defect, whether that is aggressive water chemistry, flux residue left at installation, erosion at a bend from high flow velocity, or long-term corrosion from the outside where a pipe has been buried in plaster or screed. Patching one hole in a run that is producing them does nothing about the next one, and the next one is usually weeks away rather than years.
It does not confirm there was only one leak
Where a pipe was found by following a stain, the visible failure is the one that reached a surface. A survey exists to establish whether anything else on the same system is also losing water, which is a different question from whether the patch is holding. It does not deal with what the water already did
Stopping the flow is the start of the problem, not the end of it. Water that has reached a floor build-up, insulation or a plasterboard ceiling stays there and continues to do damage long after the pipe is dry. Getting air moving and lifting coverings matters from day one.
When to Stop and Call Someone
There is a defensible amount of self-help here and a point past it where continuing makes things worse. Stop and get a professional if any of the following apply: the water cannot be isolated, the pipe is lead or steel, the failure is a split rather than a pinhole, the leak is in a floor, wall or ceiling void rather than in reach, the heating loses pressure again after the repair, the meter still moves with every outlet closed, or there is any electrical involvement at all.
The other reason to stop is evidential. Where a claim is likely, opening up or cutting into a floor or ceiling to reach a pipe destroys the moisture distribution that shows where the water travelled from, and unauthorised search damage may not be recoverable. How long will a temporary pipe repair actually last?
Assume hours to days, not weeks. A proper repair clamp with a rubber liner, fitted on clean dry copper over a pinhole, is the most durable option and can hold considerably longer, but it is still designed to be temporary. Self-amalgamating tape and epoxy putty are shorter lived because they depend on a bond to a prepared surface, and mains pressure varies through the day while hot pipes expand and contract with every heating cycle. That movement is what eventually works a patch loose.
Can I use duct tape or sealant to stop a leaking pipe?
No. Neither is rated for internal water pressure and both create the appearance of a repair while water continues to track along the outside of the pipe, often emerging somewhere else entirely. The products that work are a pipe repair clamp with a rubber liner, self-amalgamating silicone tape applied under tension, or epoxy putty on a dry keyed surface. Silicone mastic, PTFE tape wrapped around the outside of a pipe and gaffer tape all belong in the same category of false comfort.
The pipe is wet and I cannot dry it. What now?
Then the water is not properly isolated, and no method will hold. Close the relevant valve, then open the lowest outlet on that system so the pipe drains and the residual pressure falls away. On a tank fed system the cistern can keep feeding for some time after the valve is closed. If the stop tap will not turn or does not stop the flow, that is the problem to solve first, and in a shared building the external or communal valve may be the one that matters.
Is it safe to patch a pipe myself if I am claiming on insurance?
Isolating and holding a leak is exactly what policies expect, because they require reasonable steps to prevent further damage. What causes problems is opening up. Lifting a floor or cutting a ceiling to reach a pipe destroys the moisture distribution that shows which direction the water came from, and search damage created before anyone authorised it may not be recoverable. Photograph everything before you touch it, keep the dates, and leave any opening up to a survey.
My heating keeps losing pressure after I patched a radiator pipe. Why?
Most likely because the patch is passing, or because there is a second loss on the circuit. A sealed heating system is closed, so any steady pressure drop with no top-ups means water is leaving it somewhere. Log the gauge daily with no top-ups and photograph it. If it continues to fall, the circuit needs isolating and pressure testing section by section rather than patching again. Resist adding a leak sealant additive, which can block heat exchangers and obscures the defect.
When should I not attempt a temporary repair at all?
On any gas pipe, where the correct action is to leave the property and call the national gas emergency service. On lead pipework, which is too soft to patch reliably and carries drinking water implications of its own. On corroded galvanised steel, where the failure is rarely local and a patch tends to move the leak along the run.
